This Is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone follows two characters, Red and Blue, who are divided by time, space, and two sides of a war. They start off taunting one another through their letters, but this soon turns to affection.
Their separation in time is represented through the front and back of the design. The two sides don’t line up perfectly, they are offset and there is a gap between them, with the word “lose” stretching across the two, as the characters reach for one another.

Three Directions
Direction 1: Decoding
The main plot revolves around exchanging letters that are decrypted, this title treatment gives that feeling through its hard-to-read scramble.
Direction 2: Distorted Hourglass
The title is in the shape of a distorted hourglass to represent the time motif in the novel.

The distorted letters represent the disconnection of Blue and Red as they stretch across time for one another.

The Final Direction
For the final design, the title starts on the back cover and stretches across to the front. This represents the separation of Blue and Red. The title was distorted using a scanner, to give the feeling of crossing through the braids of time, the blue and red accent colors representing the characters as they time travel.
