Brief
Illustrate a poster to advertise a museum exhibit. “The New-York Historical Society is organizing a landmark exhibition that explores handmade Black dolls through the lens of race, gender, and identity.”
Concept
When researching for this poster, I wanted to emphasis the dolls and how they looked historically. I also wanted to highlight the women who made the dolls by showing the hands sewing them.
Photo References
When I did my final pencil sketch, I used the photo on the left with how I would sew. In my next round of revisions, I worked on the hands and making them more accurate. I asked my grandma to pose because she worked as a seamstress and then I recreated it myself.
Process
I worked on developing the color scheme and getting the hands to look realistic.
Exhibition
The Black Dolls exhibit came to The Strong National Museum of Play at the same time I interned there and worked on the Black Doll Designers exhibit. The Exhibits department decided to display my poster. At the opening event, the original curator of the exhibit commended my poster and its recognizability.
